Hot-keys Based Lesion Segmentation

While brain research using dynamic data has been a main target of PMOD’s developments, many scientists working in oncology have also found ways to leverage PMOD’s unique functionality. However, their needs and workflows had not been specifically addressed by PMOD.

This is changed starting with the PMOD version 3.9 build 4: the hot-key based lesion segmentation implementation improve PMOD functionality and usability for oncology research. This topic has been specifically addressed in PMOD to facilitate the oncology workflow analysis in HUMAN data and for the documentation of the results.

The keyboard-driven definition for the VOIs are available independently of the global oncology setting.

Three types of VOIs can be generated by pointing at a lesion and activating a keyboard hot-key:

  1. Spherical Peak VOI (Ctrl+Q): requires the specification of the diameter of an enclosing sphere;
  2. Isocontour VOI within a bounding space at a specified level (Ctrl+L): requires as specifications the definition of the enclosing box or sphere dimension and the definition of the thresholding type;
  3. PERCIST-type Iso-contouring VOI based on Liver VOI: it consists of an iso-contouring VOI at a threshold level obtained from a reference VOI, typically liver (Ctrl+Shift+U, Ctrl+U). A region-growing algorithm is applied from the seed point, connecting all pixels above the threshold.

A detailed description of each VOI type is available in the dedicated sections.
